For the second time in his life, Xavi Hernandez is saying goodbye to Barcelona. The coach was officially relieved of his duties earlier on Friday.
In an emotional message to the fans, the Blaugrana legend expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the club he loves.
“Dear friends, my time on the Barça bench will end this Sunday. It’s never easy to leave the club of your life, but I’m very proud of my two and a half years leading a dressing room that has felt like a second family.
“I want to thank the fans for their support and affection, always by my side and showing me the same love as during my playing days.
From Sunday onwards, I will be another fan in the stands, whether at the Olympic Stadium now or in a few months at the New Camp Nou. Before I was a player or a coach, I was a Barcelona fan and I only wish the best for this club.
“I worked with a great group of players and staff. Thanks to all of them, we achieved our goals, culminating in winning La Liga and the Supercopa last year. This season hasn’t gone as we wanted, but we’ve moved forward and helped develop a new generation of young footballers from La Masia who inspire all Barcelona fans.
“Thank you to everyone – the fans, players, staff, club employees, President, Board of Directors, sporting directors, media, and everyone I have shared this journey with over these two and a half seasons.
“I wish the best for the club that I carry in my heart. Visca el Barça.”
Despite his relatively short tenure as coach, lasting just two and a half years, Xavi managed to secure two trophies for the club: La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup.
